The family of a 15-year-old boy who was stabbed to death at a Sheffield school on Monday have said they are “utterly heartbroken”. Harvey Willgoose was fatally attacked at All Saints Catholic High School on Granville Road. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he couldn’t be saved. South Yorkshire Police have arrested a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of murder, and he is still in custody.
In a statement, Harvey’s family said that they had lost a “beloved son, brother, grandson, cousin, nephew and, most importantly, a best friend to all”. Harvey was known for being a “caring, loving and funny young man”. The family requested privacy as they try to come to terms with losing him.
The academy trust which runs the school has also paid tribute to Harvey. Steve Davies, the CEO said that Harvey was “immensely popular” with teachers and students.”He had a smile that would light up the room. Harvey was young. He was precious. He was loved.” The school was closed on Tuesday. The police investigation is continuing at pace.
Harvey’s family visited the school on Tuesday afternoon. Flowers, balloons, and cards have been left in tribute to the teenager. The Right Reverend Ralph Heskett, Bishop of Hallam confirmed he would be holding a mass service at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Handsworth to celebrate Harvey’s life.
Meanwhile, local police have expressed concern at the fact that images of school children mistaken for the suspect are being shared on social media. “We need to be clear that speculative reports on social media are not only unhelpful but could also compromise the investigation and cause further upset to an already grieving family,” said Assistant Ch Con Lindsey Butterfield.
