Southern League club Bashley’s Jordan Chiedozie has been placed into a medically induced coma after being hit by a car on the hard shoulder of the M27 in southern England this weekend. The footballer, who started his career at Bournemouth, had been returning from a match with his club’s physio when they stopped to change a tyre on Saturday evening. Their vehicle was then hit by another, resulting in 30-year-old Chiedozie suffering a range of “life-changing and potentially life-threatening injuries,” including broken bones.
The accident led to the arrest of a 44-year-old woman who was driving a silver Mercedes SLK and is suspected of being above the legal alcohol limit and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Chiedozie’s physio, Reighan Taylor, was not seriously injured, but “obviously has suffered severe trauma”, according to the club.
Kerri Hannon, secretary of the Wessex Football League, has commented, “Jordan is a great lad with a big heart and everyone is devastated. It’s just so sad that life can be so fragile, and it takes something like this to make you realise that.” Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary continue to investigate the incident.
Chiedozie’s club manager, David Lewis, was quoted by The Times as being “completely stunned” by the news, while the club chairman Steve Lewis described the Bashley “family” as “heartbroken”. The club’s match against Thatcham Town scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed.
Chiedozie, whose brother Jordon also plays for Bashley, has previously also played for the likes of Ebbsfleet and Torquay United, after coming through Bournemouth’s academy. He signed for Bashley in 2019, and was also a maths teacher
