Joan Littlewood and Murphy worked closely in his early career. Born in 1932 from the Isle of Wight, Britain, Murphy’s career in acting began during the 1950s. He was a member of the Theatre Workshop, which Joan Littlewood and Gerry Raffles established to modernize theatre and attract a more working-class audience. The production company’s focus was to reach new heights and incorporate innovations, influencing Murphy during his acting career. Notably, working with Littlewood, he acted in several Shakespeare plays, and his film, Sparrows Can’t Sing, would demonstrate his talent.
Man About the House, an ITV sitcom, would feature in Murphy’s most iconic role, as it discussed the intricacies of flat-sharing in the 1970s with two women and a man. His fellow Theatre Workshop actress Yootha Joyce would star with him in the spin-off George and Mildred, with Murphy playing the henpecked George Roper. Linda Regan, Murphy’s wife, who acted in Hi-de-Hi, and his two surviving sons, whom Murphy passed away, will mourn him.
