Global reaction to pub's Nottingham Forest free beer 'own goal'

A pub landlady in Nottinghamshire has revealed she has received global interest from her free pint offer every time Nottingham Forest scored during their 7-0 win on Saturday. Beccy Webster, who owns the Gedling Inn received messages from countries including Australia, the US, Brazil and Poland, as well as media requests, with many of the initial messages being to check whether the pub was still open. The offer, which was marketed just 45 minutes before the game, led to Webster providing almost 300 pints at a cost of up to £1,500 ($2,000).

Webster admitted she thought that Nottingham Forest would only score between two or three goals, and was upstairs feeding her baby when the goals started going in. Webster says that despite her husband suggesting they cancel the offer at half-time, she decided to stick to the deal. “I said we had to carry it through and stick to our word and we have to back Forest all the way,” said Webster.

The pub landlady hasn’t yet worked out the final cost of the offer, but has joked that she is in shock and guessing that the total cost will be more than £1,000 ($1,330), however, she is hoping to receive some help from the brewery to cover the cost. Webster has suggested that club owner Evangelos Marinakis might cover the bill adding “actually if he came to visit we would give him a free pint; he is doing such a great job.” She has now decided to make offers and deals for future matches but isn’t sure whether this will involve free pints for goals.

Nottingham Forest’s 7-0 victory over Brighton came just a week after the team fell to a 5-0 defeat away at Bournemouth. With Nottingham Forest being such a strong team this season, Webster says they will have to make a decision on how to mark upcoming games. “Maybe, maybe not, watch this space,” added Webster
