British volunteer medic loses arm and leg in Ukraine strike


While volunteering in Ukraine as a combat medic, a British medic has reportedly lost his arm and leg in a suspected drone attack that happened while he was driving his evacuation van from Pokrovsk town. Despite his injuries, the medic, who the BBC has only identified by his first name Eddy, claims that he feels “lucky”. “My first thought was, I need to keep driving, we’ve been hit,” he recalled about the attack.

According to Eddy, the van he was driving was clearly marked with an evacuation sign. He said he could “remember everything” about the strike, including the flashes and the realisation that his leg was “shredded”. He attempted to move his van to safety but “the car wasn’t going anywhere”, he told the BBC in an interview. His father has since flown to the Ukraine in order to visit him.

Eddy, who moved to Ukraine to support Kyiv during the full-scale invasion from Russia launched in February 2022, has been volunteering as a combat medic for several years. He initially deployed to Ukraine with others who had also come in support of Ukraine’s defence. However, Eddy reconsidered after the brutality of the war, his father said.

He continued by joining aid group Base UA in support of Ukraine. Eddy has claimed that losing his arm and leg has not made him cynical, and he has been able to remain positive through the support of his network and the comfort of knowing he has a home in the UK.
