The Duchess of Cambridge has called for a reset in society to prioritize physical and mental health and promote greater compassion. Catherine is launching a new initiative in her early years education project that aims to increase teaching of emotional skills. The Shaping Us project released a framework document that states tackling deep-rooted problems depends on how children are taught from their earliest days. This includes building social skills and positive relationships to help reduce poor mental health, addiction, and abuse.
“To create a physically and mentally healthier society, we must reset, restore, and rebalance. We must invest in humankind,” writes the Duchess of Cambridge in a foreword to her charity’s report. The call for more compassion and empathy follows other personal messages from the Duchess, after her tough experiences with health problems over the past year. At her Christmas carol concert, she called for “love, not fear” and said “love is the light that can shine bright, even in our darkest times”.
The Shaping Us project was founded to raise awareness of the importance of children’s first five years and how experiences in those early years can have a profound long-term influence on adult life. The project, supported by a range of experts in early years health and education, calls for more emphasis on nurturing emotional and social connections.
The Duchess of Cambridge’s initiative has been praised by early years educators and child wellbeing organizations alike. Health visiting and Family Hubs should be accessible to every family, according to Vicky Nevin, policy manager of the NSPCC. In December 2024, England’s education watchdog Ofsted warned of a widening social divide in access to childcare, particularly in low-income and high child-poverty areas.
