Homes and shops without water overnight after mains burst in Glasgow

A burst water main in the south side of Glasgow has led to many homes and shops being left without water overnight whilst several streets remain flooded. The burst occurred at approximately 16:30 on Saturday and properties in G41, G42, G43 and G44 faced disruption to their water supply. The affected areas include Shawlands and Strathbungo.

Police Scotland reported that Pollokshaws Road was closed from Albert Drive to Cumberland Street, and flooding was also present on Cumberland Street, Eglington Street and Maxwell Drive. Meanwhile, Scottish Water announced that its engineers and emergency teams continued working throughout the night, and repairs were expected to be completed by Sunday morning.

Road users and the public received advice to avoid the area. Scottish Water’s statement stated that “complex valve operations have been completed to re-route water through different parts of our network and bring all customers back into supply” even though the water may be at a reduced pressure. The company added that other network adjustments were also being carried out to boost pressure and restore regular water supplies.

The company has already warned its customers that repair work may lead to low pressure and/or discoloured water. It recommended running cold kitchen taps only at half pressure until the water runs clear if customers experience discoloured water. Scottish Water assured the public that customers who requested bottled water would be contacted to ensure their supplies are restored
