Several members of staff at a prison in Liverpool have been hospitalized following an attack, according to the Prison Officers Association (POA). The union has said that the attacks were made on members of staff whilst they were on their own with up to 60 inmates nearby. Mark Fairhurst, national chairman of the POA, noted that the situation had worsened due to an increase in the number of violent prisoners in the jail. An official for His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPSS) stated that staff wellbeing is taken very seriously.
Fairhurst told a news outlet that the current staffing level on the wings when prison officers were unlocking prisoners were inadequate and needed to change. After the assault occurred last week, staff members “retreated to a safe place and held a POA meeting so the committee could address these concerns with the senior management team”. He stated that the prison management team had lost the confidence of the staff, and claimed that there was a lack of understanding towards staff members.
Last week, the Liverpool Echo reported that a female security officer had her head split open during the attack that happened at the 750-inmate facility. A representative of HMPSS mentioned that it was essential for prison officers’ protection to be considered when conducting their daily work. Lastly, the spokesperson added that they conduct regular meetings with the POA to discuss any concerns or issues relating to prison safety.
