Walkers warned of further cliff falls on Mundesley beach

A portion of Mundesley Beach in Norfolk has been closed to visitors after a significant cliff fall occurred on Friday afternoon. According to the North Norfolk District Council’s Facebook page, the fall was serious enough to prompt coastal engineers to survey the site for additional risk. While the main beach remains open, the steps and sloping access leading to the site, as well as the car park off Seaview Road, have been sealed off. In the meantime, onlookers have been told to stay clear of the area in case further falls occur over the weekend.

Bev Reynolds, the chairwoman of Mundesley-on-Sea Parish Council, believes that the cause of the latest cliff fall is the same as its predecessor earlier in December 2021: substantial groundwater plus water run-off from the excess rain in recent weeks and not from the sea. Reynolds indicated that the area would possibly remain closed until at least Monday after the council officials put up boundaries and cordons to keep people off that part of the beach. Coastal management crews at North Norfolk District Council have been contacted by the BBC for additional information.

Over the years, erosion has become a growing problem for seaside communities on the UK’s East Coast, and while the cause of the cliff fall remains unknown to the public, precipitation clearly played a role. A lack of reinforcement and heavy rainfall caused a severe landslide in the areas in Germany recently, killing 130 individuals. The UK’s authorities must ensure that the same doesn’t occur in the area. Therefore, it’s of paramount importance that the cause of the cliff fall is correctly determined to prevent the potential for additional loss of life. The safety of visitors and area residents should be the top priority of local authorities, and additional steps should be taken to ensure that visitors do not enter any restricted areas until an engineer’s report is released and all safety protocols have been put in place
