Redknapp manages Somerset club dubbed worst in the country

Retired Premier League manager Harry Redknapp has taken on the challenge of coaching the UK’s “worst” football team in a bid to make them more successful. Last season, the Somerset County League’s Tunley Athletic finished at the bottom of the league, having lost all 26 of their matches and taking a 137-goal difference. However, after the team won a national Best Worst Team competition, Redknapp was invited to become a ‘guest manager’ in the hope he could improve the situation.

Despite having never heard of Tunley, Redknapp has taken on the challenge with pledged determination to at least “win a couple of games” during the remainder of the season. His appointment has already had a positive impact and he believes that the team are better than he expected. Although, Redknapp admits that his first match was difficult as they were playing against a top-of-the-league team, they ended up losing 8-2 but managed to score two goals.

Their captain, Tyler Davis, who put the club forward for the grassroots competition run by Specsavers, acknowledged that it has been an incredible experience for the team to be coached by such a renowned manager. Having had a “craziest couple of months” with their form declining over a season or two, they needed help from wherever they could get it. Tunley were unsure who their new manager would be, but when they saw Redknapp walk through the door, they couldn’t believe it.

This isn’t the first time Redknapp has helped coach the worst team, he previously coached former Best Worst Team, Cwm Albion. He is due to mentor Tunley until the end of this season, and although he is jokingly claims that they have their work cut out for them, he is enjoying it just as much. When asked if Tunley had their own Gareth Bale or Paolo Di Canio, Redknapp had a good-natured reply, “They must do, I didn’t see him but he must be there somewhere.”
