Doncaster Sheffield Airport: Flight risk or soaring success?

Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which closed in November 2022, is set to potentially reopen in spring 2026, as efforts to revive the airport continue gaining traction. However, some question whether or not the move is viable, particularly given the airport’s proximity to Leeds Bradford, Humberside, East Midlands, and Manchester airports, all of which lie within a 70-mile radius. Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary has voiced scepticism about Doncaster’s ability to generate sufficient passenger numbers. Leeds Bradford Chief Executive Vincent Hodder has stated that he can’t see how DSA won’t fail, while environmental campaigners have raised concerns about the environmental impact of reopening.

Nevertheless, local businesses are largely supportive of the project. Doncaster Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Dan Fell indicated that the airport will have a significant economic impact on the region, creating both highly skilled and lower skilled jobs, with its opening potentially acting as a magnet for inward investment. Fell stated that Sheffield is one of the few cities in the UK without an airport within convenient reach, while Doncaster Council has predicted that the economic benefit of reopening DSA could reach £1.5bn within 30 years.

However, concerns with the redevelopment include cost issues and environmental impact. Over £100m of public funds would be necessary to re-establish DSA, given that the local administration failed to gain private funding. Also concerning is the matter of greenhouse gas emissions associated with passenger flights, a factor brought to attention by the Green Party’s Christine Gilligan Kubo, who has called the reopening of DSA incompatible with serious plans to combat climate change.

DSA’s redevelopment will depend on a combination of factors, including the sustained financial commitment of investors, favourable economic conditions, and environmental responsibility. If reopened, DSA could drive significant economic growth in the north of England while creating jobs and opportunities for the area’s inhabitants
