Coleraine: Man in his 70s shot five times by masked men


A man in his 70s was shot several times in his arms and legs by a group of masked men in Coleraine. Police confirmed that a complaint had been received of a shooting incident at Ballygallin Park, Ballysally, at around 19:50 GMT on Thursday. Officials said that numerous men, who had worn balaclavas, had entered a home and assaulted the elderly citizen. The critically injured person was hospitalised with wounds to his head and torso, but is deemed to be in a stable condition.
Det Insp Lavery of the Police Service Northern Ireland (PSNI) condemned the violence as appalling and urged any witnesses to cooperate. The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) for East Londonderry assembly member Cara Hunter said she was “deeply disturbed” by the senseless and vicious act of violence. She called for the perpetrators to be held accountable and anyone with information to step forward and report it.
The Independent MLA Claire Sugden expressed her horror at the attack, calling for the end to this kind of brutal and inhumane violence. Coleraine councillors expressed their collective outrage and urged the community to come together to help the victim and their family. This violent attack has generated deep shock and fear within the community, who expect to live in peace and safety. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them
