Brits need better work ethic, says senior Tory MP Chris Philp


Chris Philp, shadow home secretary for the UK Conservative party, has called for the country to bolster its work ethic in order to stay competitive globally. Speaking to Nick Robinson on BBC Radio 4’s Political Thinking programme, Philp said that the UK needs to address the nine million working age adults not in employment. To compete with countries like China and India, the Conservative MP added, the UK needs “everyone to make a contribution.”

Philp has had direct experience setting up businesses in sectors like finance and travel, and said he developed his strong work ethic as a teenager, delivering newspapers, washing cars, and working at Sainsburys. “It’s worked for me,” Philp added. “It can work for the country as well.” He noted, however, that he thinks “a belief in hard work” is “missing in Britain.”

The MP also discussed his time serving with Liz Truss, saying he had urged the former prime minister to show restraint with her tax-cutting mini-Budget, which ultimately led to her resignation and market turmoil. Philp had posted on social media after the announcement of these measures that Sterling was “strengthening on the back of the new UK growth plan”, but the pound rapidly declined. “Clearly commenting on currency movement was a dumb idea and I shouldn’t have done that,” Philp said.

During the interview, Philp also discussed a personal experience, the premature birth of his twins in 2013. He said he was “not in control” and had to be reliant on others for help, an experience that contrasted with his usual emphasis on working hard and taking responsibility for oneself.
