Ammanford school stabbing: Girl took knife in every day, court hears

A teenager on trial for stabbing two teachers and a pupil at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, Carmarthenshire, admitted to taking a knife to school every day, a court has heard. The 14-year-old faces charges of attempted murder related to the attack that occurred in April of last year. Fiona Elias, a teacher, teaching assistant Liz Hopkin, and pupil were injured. The defendant claims to have never intended to harm anyone, despite bringing weapons to school as an “instinct thing.” The teenager has been reported to have been self-harming and a victim of bullying.

At Swansea Crown Court, the teenager claimed her father checked her school bag daily after a knife was discovered in it in September 2023. This led her to place knives in her pockets instead. She testified that she did not like Ms Elias but said she never intended to harm her, adding that she was not familiar with Ms Hopkin before the incident. She stated that she never intended to deliberately target Ms Hopkin’s neck. The defendant also claimed she remembered drawing an image called “Mrs Frogface Elias,” but it was just “taking the mick.”

The girl’s defense barrister asked her how she felt about the incident, to which she replied, “It just doesn’t sound like me. It’s kind of hard to forget, but also hard to remember, I suppose I’m sorry.” When the defense barrister asked the teenager about her attack on the pupil, she stated that the pupil called her a psychopath and in response, she said, “It’s your fault,” very quietly. The young defendant said she felt regret at the way she behaved that day: “It was really out of character.”

Prosecutor William Hughes KC said in his closing speech, “You may not think it’s uncommon for a teenager to write dark thoughts. But it’s a world of difference, ladies and gentlemen, to carry out those thoughts and actually doing it.” The trial continues to determine whether the evidence and testimony will result in a conviction on one or more of the attempted murder charges
