Renée Zellweger has expressed her hopes that Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy will not be the last film in the franchise. The latest film in the series, which has been described as the last, sees Zellweger’s character navigate modern dating, single motherhood and life as a widow. Speaking at the film’s premiere, Zellweger said: “Let me live in denial for a little longer.” Author Helen Fielding, on whose books the films are based, has not entirely ruled out a further chapter.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is based partly on Fielding’s own loss – her husband, Kevin Curran, died in 2016. Zellweger described the film as “a pretty special one” because it explores “Helen’s own experiences about loss, grief and finding new happiness”.
Fielding believes that the popularity of Bridget Jones lies in “its emotional honesty”. The character was originally an anonymous column in The Independent which Fielding assumed would be stopped “for being too silly”. Instead, she was able to be honest in a way that touched readers. Fielding said she had been “really touched” that the franchise had also appealed to Generation Z, who related to Bridget’s “emotional fragility” and rituals.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy sees the return of Hugh Grant’s character, Daniel Cleaver, and introduces two new love interests played by Leo Woodall and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Zelewegger said that, having seen herself as “really, really lucky to get the part”, she felt “just trying not to get fired”.
Fielding has also teased the possibility of more Bridget Jones material to come. It has long been rumoured that the character of Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth, was based on barrister-turned-politician Sir Keir Starmer, but Fielding refused to confirm or deny the speculation. Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is set for release in the UK on Valentine’s Day
