Vanya Gaberova, a woman accused of spying for Russia, told the Old Bailey that she believed she was assisting her boyfriend with police work. Gaberova claims that she was misled by Biser Dzhambazov, who said they were working on legitimate operations linked to Interpol. Gaberova, along with Katrin Ivanova and Tihomir Ivanchev, denies the charge of conspiracy to spy. Dzhambazov and Orlin Roussev have already pleaded guilty.
Bulgarian nationals Gaberova, Ivanova, Ivanchev, Dzhambazov, and Roussev were allegedly involved in multiple espionage operations against people and places of interest to the Russian state. During Gaberova’s defence, she told the court that Dzhambazov showed her fake Interpol identity cards bearing his name and picture “many times.” Gaberova also said that Dzhambazov promised to help her become a police officer.
Gaberova explained that she wanted to be a police officer, but she could not afford to obtain the necessary qualifications in Bulgaria when she was younger. Instead, she trained to become an accountant. Dzhambazov then asked her to accompany him on a “work trip” to Vienna, where they would conduct surveillance of the investigative journalist Christo Grozev, whom Dzhambazov said was “corrupt.” Ms Gaberova and Mr Ivanchev had been in a relationship, but as that relationship broke down, she became “very close” with Dzhambazov, who was himself in a relationship with Ms Ivanova.
Gaberova also told the court that the rest of her time with Dzhambazov was spent on the beach, eating out, and other normal holiday activities. She claimed that on one occasion, Dzhambazov told her he had an urgent job with Interpol and they had to go to Montenegro to look for a Bulgarian man who stole a lot of money from the country. They travelled from Sofia across the border, with a second man who was not identified to the jury. Gaberova denied ever meeting or having any contact with Orlin Roussev
