Several Coca-Cola products are being recalled in the UK by the bottling partner of the company, after the “elevated levels” of the chemical chlorate were detected. Cafe and restaurant deliveries of Coca-Cola Original Taste, Diet Coke, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, and Sprite Zero, and 6x250ml Appletiser packs sent to British supermarkets have been withdrawn from sale.
Chlorate can be generated when chlorine-based disinfectants used in the treatment of water and food processing and exposure to high amounts of it may cause health problems including thyroid dysfunction, particularly among infants and children.
Several cans carrying production codes from 328 GE to 338 GE are affected, however, the bulk of Coca-Cola products including glass and plastic bottles are not affected. According to the bottling partner of Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, the risk of illness caused by consumption of these products is minimal.
“We’re very sorry that on this event a small number of our products failed to meet our high standards, and we apologize for any trouble this has caused,” the company said in a statement. “The quality and protection of our goods are our top priority.”
The announcement follows the larger Coca-Cola European product recall on Tuesday. Independent specialist analysis, however, decided that any associated risk of feeling temporarily unwell from consumption of these goods was very low
