Wimbledon school crash: Woman rearrested over deaths of two girls

Police have re-arrested the driver of a car that crashed into a school tea party killing two eight-year-old girls in Wimbledon, southwest London. Claire Freemantle, 48, had “no recollection of what took place” following the deaths of Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau on 6 July 2023. Following the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision last June not to charge the driver, the police reviewed the case. It is now a live investigation, and Ms. Freemantle has been re-arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Det Supt Lewis Basford only provided a brief statement about the case. He offered no details on the conduct of the investigation but informed the press that he couldn’t go into the specifics to maintain its integrity. The Metropolitan Police said it had responded to “concerns raised by the families of Nuria and Selena” about the CPS’s decision not to charge the driver.

Ms. Freemantle was first arrested at the scene of the crash at the Study Preparatory School. The CPS said it had determined Ms. Freemantle had suffered an epileptic seizure while driving, leading to the vehicle losing control and ending up in the school. As a result, the CPS chose not to charge her, according to the investigation.

According to reports, after the incident, the victims’ families said that hundreds of people, including parents, teachers, children, neighbors, friends, and family members, would never be able to lead “normal” lives again. Witnesses are being urged to come forward because the Met has identified a few lines of inquiry that require further scrutiny, and they have their main priority is to ensure that those lines of inquiry are met.
