Just Stop Oil disrupts Sigourney Weaver West End play


Environmental activists from Just Stop Oil interrupted a performance of The Tempest at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane on Monday evening. Two protesters climbed on stage and launched a confetti cannon. One voice shouted, “We’ll have to stop the show, ladies and gents, sorry.” Alien star Sigourney Weaver, who was sitting on stage, was quickly escorted away from the action. The protesters were met with boos and cheers before being escorted from the stage after less than a minute.

The protesters held an orange banner reading “Over 1.5 degrees is a global shipwreck”. This was in reference to a recent finding that annual global temperature rose above the internationally agreed 1.5C target for the first time in 2024. This line drew a correlation to the plot of The Tempest, which famously features a ship sinking.

Just Stop Oil has a history of disrupting events and venues, including the Chelsea Flower Show, the Proms, Stonehenge and the National Gallery. Earlier this month, two women were arrested for spray-painting over naturalist Charles Darwin’s grave inside Westminster Abbey.

Environmental groups have become more active recently in trying to raise public awareness of the issue of climate change. These protests often seek to disrupt everyday events in order to bring attention to the cause. The Just Stop Oil demonstration is only one example of this trend, and it remains to be seen how much public support such actions will ultimately garner
