A 61-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of fraudulently completing the UK citizenship tests for at least 14 applicants. Immigration enforcement investigators arrested the woman at an address in Enfield on Monday, as it’s believed she donned an array of wigs and disguises to avoid detection when taking the exams on behalf of others. The accused is said to have completed the Life in the UK Test, which is a requirement for anyone seeking to become a British citizen or obtain indefinite leave to remain, across multiple test centres in the country, doctoring ID documents to evade detection.
Commenting on her arrest, a spokesperson for the Home Office explained that “Immigration officers said they seized ‘several false documents and an array of wigs’, alleged to have been used in the fraudulent scheme”. Immigration Enforcement Criminal and Financial Investigation Inspector Phillip Parr has stated that thanks to his team, “we have put a stop to this dangerous scheme,” adding that “this individual is believed to have orchestrated a pre-meditated plan to avoid detection, meticulously selecting disguises and test centre locations across the country to evade the authorities.”
The suspect is believed to have taken the fraudulent tests between June 2022 and August 2023. Despite her arrest, the investigation remains ongoing, and the woman is currently in custody. The Life in the UK Test comprises 24 questions and aims to assess the applicant’s knowledge of British society, history and values. It may be considered a severe offence to fraudulently complete these tests, as they are critical for the UK government to assess people’s eligibility for citizenship and residence
