Cardiff: University confirms plans to cut 400 jobs

The Cardiff University has recently confirmed its plans to cut nearly 400 full-time jobs owing to the shortfall in their funding. The proposals aimed at cost-saving might also lead to school and subject closures as well as the merger of schools with nursing, music, and modern languages being some of the subjects affected due to the cut-down.

The Cardiff University and College Union (UCU) called the cut-downs unnecessary and unnecessary and said it would resist compulsory redundancies. However, the University said that such defaults would only be essential if the situation demanded it.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wendy Larner, said that the University can no longer function as it has been as the need of the hour is to make difficult decisions. The university is facing declining international student applications, rising cost pressures, and the need to reform for survival, which eventually led to taking this challenging road.

A formal consultation will be held, with the job cuts, reducing the workforce by 7%. The cuts have impacted the staff, and the subjects to be cut down include theology, ancient history, religion, and nursing, among others. Furthermore, subject mergers will take place, with earth sciences, physics, and chemistry merging to create the School of Natural Sciences and mathematics and computer science merging to become the School of Data Science, among others
