The Bishop of Liverpool, The Right Reverend Doctor John Perumbalath, has denied allegations of sexual assault after an investigation by Channel 4 News. Perumbalath has been accused of assaulting two women, with one allegedly having been assaulted in the diocese of Chelmsford on separate occasions between 2019 and 2023. A female bishop also claimed that she was sexually harassed by him. Channel 4 News reported that Perumbalath was interviewed voluntarily under caution by police in March last year. The police, however, took no further action following investigations.
Following the felony allegations, the Church of England conducted its investigation into the claims, with its spokesperson stating that a “learning outcome” had been identified in the process. The bishop was asked to engage fully in this learning outcome. The spokesperson confirmed that the complaint was investigated further by the police, who dismissed it. The statement continued, “Shortly after the start of this process, a further disclosure was made by another woman. The information brought by the second complainant was explored and assessed not to be a safeguarding matter but a matter of alleged misconduct.” The church provided support for this second complainant throughout and continues to do so.
Bishop John maintains that he did not assault the two women and had always refuted the claims. Further to this, he added powerfully that the allegations set out in this programme occurred in public settings, with other people present. In his statement, he stated that the police had investigated the claims and taken no further action. He explained that he takes every allegation concerning safeguarding very seriously and works hard to provide proper leadership in this area.
John Perumbalath, from Kerala in South India, was ordained into the Church of North India in 1994 and moved to the UK in 2001, first taking up positions in the Diocese of Rochester. However, in 2022, he was announced in the position of Bishop of Liverpool
