A funeral for The Vivienne, also known as James Lee Williams, was held in north Wales on Monday. The Drag Race UK winner died three weeks ago at age 32. Mourners included celebrities like Cheryl Hole, Jade Thirlwall, Claire Sweeney, and Kim Woodburn. The coffin arrived in a horse-drawn carriage pulled by black horses with green plumes, carrying floral tributes spelling “Vivienne”, “James”, and “Son”. The crown and sceptre awarded to RuPaul’s Drag Race winners were also carried into the church.
The service for The Vivienne took place at St Margaret’s Church in Bodelwyddan, near the performer’s childhood home and school. Co-stars from The Vivienne’s musical theatre career attended, as did high-profile Drag Race alumni like Baga Chipz, Danny Beard, and Veronica Green. White doves were released after the funeral.
After winning the first series of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, The Vivienne was the first competitor from the UK to appear in the US version of the show, competing in series seven of Drag Race All Stars. Williams also made appearances on mainstream television shows including Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and Dancing on Ice. An outpouring of grief followed Williams’ passing, leading to public tributes and donation drives in memory of the performer.
Police reported that there were no suspicious circumstances in Williams’ death. Friends and family paid tribute to the performer at a public vigil held in Liverpool, where public buildings were lit up green in honour of The Vivienne’s role as The Wicked Witch of the West in the UK and Ireland tour of The Wizard of Oz. A book of condolences was opened at The Museum of Liverpool for members of the public and was later given to the performer’s family
