A man charged with the murder of a university lecturer has appeared in Plymouth Magistrates Court. Paul Butler, 53, appeared in court accused of killing Claire Chick, 48, who was found seriously injured on Wednesday and later died in hospital. Butler is also charged with the unlawful possession of a bladed weapon. He was remanded in custody and is due to appear again at Plymouth Crown Court on Tuesday.
During the brief hearing, Butler only spoke to confirm his name, address and date of birth. He was dressed in a grey, custody-issued tracksuit. District Judge Stuart Smith spoke directly to the family of Chick in the public gallery, expressing his condolences for their loss. “The pain, anger and loss you are suffering is unimaginable,” he said.
Butler’s next appearance in Plymouth Crown Court is scheduled for Friday, 3 March. Further information surrounding the accusations against Butler has not yet been made public
