New photo of kilted King Charles released for Burns Night

To commemorate Burns Night, a new photo of King Charles III has been released. Taken in the library of Balmoral Castle, the image features the King donning a tartan kilt made from the King Charles III tartan, which is based on the Balmoral tartan sett that dates back to the mid-19th century. The photograph was taken by Millie Pilkington, who is known for photographing the Royal Family on multiple occasions.

In addition to the kilt, the King is also seen wearing a tie in matching colors and a brown sporran, which complements the rest of his outfit. His Majesty’s strong support in preserving the culture and traditions of Highland Dress and Scottish Tartans has been recognized in this tartan design, which features a green, blue, and red pattern. The Scottish Tartans Authority had designed this tartan in 2023.

The annual celebration of Burns Night marks the life of Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet. Traditional meals during the night include a supper of haggis, accompanied by neeps and tatties (mashed turnips and potatoes). However, the photo comes in light of significant historical events. The King is set to visit the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp. He will be taking part in a Holocaust commemoration ceremony, which is a pivotal moment to honor the lives of the Holocaust victims.

The King’s visit to Auschwitz marks his first trip of the year, coming almost a year after being diagnosed with cancer. After undergoing treatment, he resumed attending events in April, visiting Australia and Samoa at the end of last year. With his unwavering dedication towards promoting and preserving Scottish traditions, the release of the King’s tartan-clad photo serves to commemorate Scottish history, culture, and tradition
