Feathers McGraw in hot demand at tattoo parlours

Feathers McGraw, the cunning penguin arch-nemesis of Wallace and Gromit, has become a hit at tattoo parlours across the UK, with fans sharing images of their inked tributes to the classic character. Since the release of Aardman’s Vengeance Most Fowl, which debuted on BBC One on Christmas Day and has been viewed by more than 21 million people, tattoo artists have reported an uptick in demand for Feathers McGraw tattoos. Faith Garvie, an artist at Black Moon Tattoo Studio in Liverpool, said she had completed six of these tattoos in the past week alone.

Garvie attributes the popularity of the design to the “magic of claymation,” saying that the character’s mute emotiveness resonates with fans across generations. Most of her clients who want Feathers McGraw tattoos, she said, stem from families who grew up with the characters. “One guy came in and got his first tattoo – it was of the ‘Feathers Wanted’ poster,” she said. “He was the dad of two teenagers and said he had really wanted the tattoo since lockdown, so that was really lovely.”

One 20-year-old university student, Gia O’Donohoe, got her Feathers tattoo from a Liverpool parlour after finding the film funny. Her tattoo depicts Feathers petting a seal on his lap, and it garnered significant attention on social media after Aardman Studios reposted the image. Gia also has a tattoo of Gromit, Wallace’s heroic dog and Feathers’ arch-nemesis, on her left leg.

Faith Garvie noted two popular designs for Feathers McGraw tattoos among her clients, one from the classic film The Wrong Trousers and the other from the villain’s appearance in Wallace and Gromit’s house. “It’s mainly just finding the time to be honest,” she said when asked if she planned to get a Feathers McGraw tattoo of her own
