A man in Plymouth, England has been charged with the murder of Claire Chick, a nurse and university lecturer, who died on Wednesday after being found seriously injured in West Hoe Road. Paul Butler, 53, who lives in Stangray Avenue in the city, is due to appear in front of Plymouth Magistrates’ Court on Monday, pending further investigation into the case. Senior investigating officer Det Insp Rob Smith confirmed that the police are still conducting inquiries into the killing and thanked the community for their support.
Claire Chick worked as a lecturer at the University of Plymouth and was highly respected within the institution. The vice chancellor, Prof Richard Davies, expressed his sadness at the news of her death and stated that “her contribution to Plymouth was significant and deeply felt”. He added that Chick had been a respected nurse, lecturer, and personal tutor who was closely involved in developing nursing programmes, students, and academics in Europe, Africa, and Asia while serving as the associate head of school at the university’s school of nursing and midwifery. He went on to say that she would be deeply missed by her colleagues as much as by her family and friends.
Chick’s family also released a statement, saying, “We are absolutely devastated and broken at the loss of our beautiful caring mother” and describing her as “the most beautiful lively soul”. They thanked everyone who had supported them at this incredibly difficult time.
The death of Claire Chick has shocked the university and the wider community in which she worked, taught, and lived. The circumstances of her death are still being investigated and further information will be released as and when possible
