Wales: Storm Éowyn brings power cuts and schools closures


Storm Éowyn has caused multiple power cuts and led to the closure of 45 schools as it battered Wales with severe gales. Forecasters warned of damage to homes and buildings as well as flooding as gusts of up to 93 mph (150 km/h) hit the country. The Met Office issued several weather warnings, including an amber warning for strong winds. The Natural Resources Wales (NRW) had a series of flood alerts in force across Wales due to heavy rain overnight, with NRW closing four forests on Friday due to the risk of falling trees.

Energy supply companies SP Energy Networks and National Grid reported power cuts, with SP Energy Networks reporting power cuts in north Wales while National Grid was reporting 29 different incidents with the worst affected at Three Cocks in Powys and Pontyates in Carmarthenshire. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) declared several flood alerts in force across Wales, including Cardiff, Swansea, Conwy and Gwynedd, following heavy rain overnight, and also closed four forests and reserves on Friday due to the risk of falling trees.

The M48 Severn Bridge was closed due to strong winds while the A477 Cleddau Bridge between Pembroke Dock and Neyland was closed to high-sided vehicles. Gwent Police reported officers dealing with surface flooding on the B4598 Raglan road towards Abergavenny. In north Wales, speed restrictions were implemented on the Britannia Bridge over the Menai Strait. All ferry sailings between Holyhead and Dublin and Fishguard and Rosslare were cancelled.

Transport for Wales and Network Rail urged customers to check before travelling on Friday and into the weekend with delays and cancellations expected. Rail operators Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, and Grand Central also warned customers not to travel on routes across parts of north Wales and Scotland.

Storm Éowyn is the fifth named storm of the 2024-25 season in the UK, which began in October. The Met Office issued two yellow weather warnings on Friday, one warning for wind covering the whole of Wales all day and another for rain in places until 09:00. The rain warning covered Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen and Vale of Glamorgan
