Sutton: Deveca Rose jailed after her four sons died in house fire

A mother has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after her four young sons died in a fire at their home in Sutton, south-west London. Deveca Rose, aged 30, had been out shopping when the fire broke out on December 16, 2021. When Rose returned home, firefighters were already at the property, attempting to rescue the two sets of twins who were left alone in the locked house. Four-year-olds Kyson and Bryson Hoath, and Leyton and Logan Hoath, aged three, all died in the blaze.

At the Old Bailey last autumn, Rose was found guilty of the manslaughter of her children. She was cleared of a single count of child cruelty. The family had been living in a house that was in a state of disarray with rubbish and human excrement on the floor. The fire is believed to have started from either a discarded cigarette or an upturned tealight.

During the sentencing, Judge Mark Lucraft KC said that none of the shopping Rose had gone out to buy was “essential or vital.” He also commented on the “deeply tragic” nature of the case and how four young lives had been “gone in just a few moments through an intense fire.” Rose sat in the dock with an anorak hood over her head, wearing headphones which her defence barrister said was for medical reasons. Victim impact statements from the boys’ family were read at the court hearing.

The children’s father, Dalton Hoath, expressed his loss in a statement. He described the day of the fire as the “worst day of his life” and is “devastated” by the loss of his “beautiful boys.” The children’s great-grandmother Sally Johnson also addressed the court and said she is now empty. She stated that “they are now all together forever and need never be alone again.” Rose was described as having “complex psychiatric mental health needs” when she was caring for her children alone. Although the judge did not find her responsibility to be substantially reduced, Rose had “perhaps suffered the greatest loss of all.
