The UK is bracing itself for the arrival of Storm Éowyn, which is expected to bring life-threatening winds to the northern and western regions. People have been advised to stay indoors as Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland are set to be the most affected areas. The Met Office has issued red weather warnings for these areas, indicating winds which could reach up to 100 mph. In Northern Ireland, schools will be closed, while travel is expected to be severely disrupted. There are similar warnings for the central belt of Scotland, including Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The Met Office has also issued less severe amber and yellow warnings for both wind and rain across the UK on Friday and Saturday, with a total of 11 warnings in place. Met Éireann, the Irish Republic’s weather service, has also issued severe red weather warnings as “hurricane force winds” are expected in the country. ScotRail has announced all rail services in Scotland will be suspended, while train operators have issued warnings not to travel in the north of England and north Wales. The AA has urged drivers in the red warning areas to delay their journey if possible.
The UK will experience rapid winds increasing from west to east on Friday morning and into the afternoon, with winds gusting up to 90 mph. This is expected to cause widespread disruption to travel, with roads badly affected and flights, trains and ferries subject to cancellations. Power cuts are also likely to occur.
