Plymouth murder suspect could be 'armed and dangerous'


Police in Plymouth have released an image of a man they are searching for in connection with the death of a woman who was found severely injured in the street. Paul Antony Butler, 53, is the man police said is wanted and advised members of the public not to approach him as he could be armed and dangerous. The woman suffered critical injuries and died in hospital during the early hours of Thursday having been attacked in Plymouth the previous night. Police have issued a warning alongside the manhunt, urging people to call 999 immediately if they see Butler.

Detective Inspector Rob Smith has said: “We have taken the steps of releasing an image of a man we need to identify in connection to the murder investigation”. The suspect remains at large and police have said a major response is under way. Police have said the suspect is tall, about 6ft 5in (195cm), and of proportionate build with brown and grey hair, and blue eyes.

The general manager of the Central Convenience on Walker Terrace, David Badham, said shop staff had heard screams and people asking for an ambulance. His shop was inside the police cordon with doors locked and under police instructions not to allow anyone to go in or out of the shop. A resident who preferred to remain anonymous said she was “deeply shocked and saddened” by the incident.

Police have urged anyone who sees Butler to contact the police immediately and not to approach him. Authorities are still investigating the murder and have appealed to the public to provide them with any sightings of or information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts. Investigations are ongoing.

The case has stunned the community and has left a profound impact on residents. The local police has stressed the focus of the investigation is on finding and capturing Butler as quickly as possible in order to protect the public from potential harm
