A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after 12-year-old Leo Ross was stabbed to death in Birmingham. Leo was found near Scribers Lane in the Hall Green area of the city and died a few hours later in hospital. The suspect was also detained over an unrelated assault on a woman in her eighties on 19 January. He has been held in custody for questioning. Floral tributes and messages have been left at the scene.
A classmate of Leo’s at Christ Church C of E Secondary Academy described him as kind, helpful and welcoming. Hana said that his passing was “really sad and ridiculous” and that he would do his work and would “get on with it.” Leo’s mother has described him as “funny, sweet and not having one aggressive bone in his body.”
Leo’s death is the latest in a series of high-profile knife crime incidents involving young people in the West Midlands. In June 2024, two 12-year-old boys were found guilty of murdering Shawn Seesahai with a machete in Wolverhampton. In November 2024, a 15-year-old boy was charged with murder after a 17-year-old boy was stabbed in Marston Green. A 15-year-old boy was charged with attempted murder on 5 January, following the stabbing of a 14-year-old boy in Oldbury.
West Midlands Police has said that officers will be carrying out patrols locally to try to reassure residents. Youth violence and knife crime are being tackled through “robust policing” and investment in prevention, including education programs at schools. Simon Foster, West Midlands police, and crime commissioner said there had been a reduction in related offenses in the region, which he described as “welcome,” but he was “not… remotely complacent” and that “one victim of youth violence and knife crime is one too many.” He called for everyone to commit to constant and unremitting action to tackle youth violence and knife crime and protect young people and vulnerable individuals to save lives
