Deepfakes: Creator of fake video of MLA Cara Hunter has not been found

A politician in Stormont has spoken out about the lack of progress in the hunt for the person who created a false pornographic video of her using deepfake technology. Cara Hunter, an assembly member for East Londonderry from the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), was the victim of a deepfake video three years ago during the 2022 Stormont elections. In a deepfake video, the face of one person is superimposed on to the face of another using artificial intelligence to create a convincing image or video.

Hunter has since campaigned for legislation in Northern Ireland that would make the creation of deepfake images a criminal offence. Speaking on BBC Radio Foyle’s North West Today programme, Hunter noted that although the Police Service of Northern Ireland is very sympathetic, it is unable to progress the case without appropriate laws or investment in cybercrime technology, which is lacking in Northern Ireland.

The lack of progress in Hunter’s case and the lack of investment in cybercrime have led Hunter to worry that this could happen to anyone. In her interview, Hunter appealed to anyone with information to come forward and called on the Department of Justice to invest and develop solutions to tackle cybercrime. She added that the problem of deepfakes is sinister and highly convincing, which could lead to anyone, male or female, being targeted in the same way, like any woman, any child, and any man.

Hunter also pointed out that other countries across Europe have more advanced AI centres to support people who have been targeted by this technology. She called on the DoJ to emulate the AIcentres in Germany that not only look at AI innovation but also provide support to people who have been deepfaked, enabling them to find guidance to overcome this traumatic experience.

Hunter still does not know who was behind the deepfake video creation, but she has appealed to anyone with information about deepfakes to come forward. The experience was the most horrific and stressful time in her life and had taken a long-term toll on her mental health. In January, Channel 4 will feature Hunter in a documentary with TV presenter Vicky Pattison, exploring the issue of deepfake videos and the impact they have
