Sentence review bid made for Sara Sharif's father


The Solicitor General is appealing the sentence handed down to Urfan Sharif, the father of Sara Sharif, who was found guilty of her murder last year. Urfan Sharif was given life imprisonment with a minimum of 40 years to be served before he can be allowed parole. The appeal is being made on the grounds that the sentence was overly lenient. Lucy Rigby, the Solicitor General, referred the sentence to the Court of Appeal but it remains up to the court to decide if the sentence should be increased.

Sara Sharif was the victim of extensive abuse over a period of more than two years, during which time she suffered burns, beatings, and other injuries. Her body was found at the family home in Woking, Surrey in 2023. Beinash Batool, Sara’s stepmother, was given a life sentence with a minimum term of 33 years. Batool’s sentence will not be referred to the Court of Appeal.
