Whitney Houston's real-life bodyguard on life with troubled star

Former police sergeant and close protection officer David Roberts has published a memoir of the six years he spent as Whitney Houston’s bodyguard. Roberts joined the RAF Police in 1968 and went on to serve in the North Wales and Met Police forces, concluding his career as a sergeant providing security for heads of state and dignitaries. It was while working at the US embassy in London in 1988 that he first met Houston. Roberts describes her as “most sophisticated, educated, intelligent, shy young lady” who he guarded and protected for six years. He spent years travelling with the superstar across the globe while keeping her safe from fans and potential threats including obsessive stalkers.

Roberts revealed there were around 50 fans on Houston’s Far East tour who were deemed as a potential threat. During her touring obligations, the star would spend most of her time in her hotel room on the phone to comedian Eddie Murphy with whom she had a high-profile relationship. At that time, the media speculated about Houston’s tumultuous romantic relationship with singer Bobby Brown whom she eventually married in 1992; they separated in 2006 and divorced in 2007. Roberts revealed the day of their wedding, “all the people who were involved in the security there said, ‘OK guys, we’ll be back here next year for the divorce party – we really did not think it would last and yet she proved us all wrong”.
