North Lincolnshire Council has confirmed it will provide over 6,000 pensioners with free air fryers. A total of 1,000 have already been delivered, with another 5,000 set to be sent out in the next few weeks. The council is using the government’s Household Support Fund (HSF) to fund the cooking equipment after the winter fuel payment was axed for people who do not receive pension credit or other forms of means-tested financial assistance.
Last year, the scheme was announced and pensioners were invited to apply for a range of energy-efficient cooking appliances. As well as air fryers, over 1,300 slow cookers and almost 400 one-cup kettles are reportedly being sent out by the council. The Local Democracy Reporting Service notes that the cooking equipment will help cut individuals’ bills while enabling them to cook healthy nutritious meals.
The council will provide cooking lessons to more than 700 elderly persons, aiming to educate residents on how to efficiently use their air fryer and pick up new recipes. Rob Waltham, the council’s leader, added that a single batch of food cooked in an air fryer could be considerably less expensive than the same dish cooked using a standard electric oven.
Frank Cooper, from Scunthorpe, said the appliance had helped him whip up quick meals and save money too. “It’s really easy to use and saves on washing up too. I even did crispy roast potatoes for Christmas in it. It’s marvellous,” he said
