Police in Greater Manchester have seized an illegal Tesla Cybertruck due to safety concerns. The vehicle, which weighs over three tonnes and carries a price tag of approximately £48,000, was seen in Whitefield, Bury, before being pulled over by officers last night. Although registered and insured abroad, the Cybertruck is not certified or otherwise road-legal in the UK.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said they had confiscated the vehicle and reported its driver, a UK resident, to the relevant authorities. In a social media post, GMP noted that concerns exist around the safety of other road users or pedestrians if they were involved in a collision with the Cybertruck. GMP referred to the vehicle as “eye-catching”, with its unusual design and futuristic, bullet-proof construction.
Tesla has been in the news with recalls of the Cybertruck in the past due to concerns about its accelerator pedals; in April 2024, thousands of the vehicles were recalled. Although legal in the US, the Cybertruck, made of rocket-like steel materials, has not yet passed UK road-safety tests.
GMP referred to Operation Wolverine, established in 2007 to target drivers without insurance in relation to the seizure of the Cybertruck. The owner of the vehicle will have to provide proof of ownership and appropriate insurance before the vehicle is released back to them. Despite the high price tag and unique design of the Cybertruck, legitimate concerns remain about the safety of other road users and pedestrians in the event of a collision
