Taylor Swift: London mayor to be investigated over free tickets

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is facing an investigation by the Greater London Authority (GLA) over allegations he breached rules by accepting free tickets to a Taylor Swift concert. The tickets, which were worth around £3,000, were gifted to Khan by a private events company to watch the American pop star at Wembley Stadium in August 2018. Khan was amongst five City Hall staffers, including two senior officials who enjoyed the hospitality.

Conservative Assembly Member Susan Hall filed a complaint with the GLA, claiming Khan had “contravened” the gifts and hospitality procedure, and requested an investigation. Hall stressed potential issues arising from the mayor being hosted in the box by a private company that had worked for City Hall. She also enquired why the timing of the declaration of the tickets had been altered, asked whether a “technical fault” could have prevented a “timely declaration” and questioned changes made after being registered.

While reviewing the complaint, the monitoring officer dismissed three of the allegations. However, an investigation is now due to take place on whether Khan “exercised an appropriate level of caution” when accepting the tickets. A spokes-person for Khan said: “Any gift accepted by the mayor is declared openly and transparently. In this case, there was an administrative error which was corrected.” Khan’s office also stated he had no involvement in the procurement process of GLA events or tendering of contracts.

Hall stated she was “disappointed” at the investigation and that the mayor declared the tickets late while initially mis-declaring who donated them. She added: “More answers are desperately needed.” The Conservatives requested further clarity on rules for accepting gifts and hospitality for companies that have had contracts with the GLA
