Denis Law: Manchester United and Scotland legend dies aged 84

Denis Law, one of the greatest Scottish footballers of all time, has died at the age of 84. He was the only Scottish player to have won the Ballon d’Or. Law, who was affectionately known as ‘The King’ and ‘The Lawman’, played for Manchester United, Manchester City, and Scotland. He scored 237 goals in 404 appearances for United, making him the third-highest scorer in the club’s history.

Born in Aberdeen, Law began his career with Huddersfield Town before moving to Italian club Torino. He was also capped 55 times for Scotland, scoring 30 goals, making him Scotland’s joint top scorer of all time. Law was transferred for a British record fee three times during his career.

In 2021, Law was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Law’s family issued a statement saying, “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently.”

Manchester United paid tribute to Law, saying, “He will always be celebrated as one of the club’s greatest and most beloved players. Our deepest condolences go out to Denis’ family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more.” Law was part of the United team that won the European Cup in 1968, the first English club to do so.

After retiring from football, Law became a television pundit, patron of UK-based charity Football Aid, and established the Denis Law Legacy Trust, which operates programmes and activities focused around community engagement and widening sporting participation. He was appointed CBE in 2016 for services to football and charity, received honorary degrees from Aberdeen, St Andrews and Robert Gordon universities, had statues erected in his honour at Old Trafford and Aberdeen, and received the Freedom of the City of Aberdeen. Law will always be remembered as one of the greatest footballers Scotland has ever produced and his contribution to football and charity will never be forgotten
