A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after a woman died and a two-year-old girl was seriously injured at a home in Ashford. The incident was reported to police at 13:15 GMT on Thursday following a report of a concern for safety. The woman, who was in her 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene whilst the child was taken to the hospital for treatment. The victim and the suspect were said to be known to each other and there is no believed to be a wider risk to the public.
A team of specialist officers are working around the clock to gather further information as the investigation led by the Surrey and Sussex Police Major Crime Team continues. Det Ch Insp Kimball Edey said that anyone with information should come forward as this is still an incredibly early stage in the investigation. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims at this unbelievably difficult time,” he added.
Local councillor Michelle Arnold said the community was ” in shock over this horrific incident.” She said she hadn’t liaised with police but had been speaking to residents inside Imtech House to reassure them that everything is okay. A small police presence remains at the scene of the crime whilst neighbours expressed their shock at the events. One neighbour described hearing “screaming and shouting” before police arrived on the scene. Lincoln Jopp, the MP for Spelthorne, declared that he will support the police as the investigation develops.
The authorities believe there to be no wider risk to the community. Police have requested that anyone with information on the incident come forward and contact them or the charity Crimestoppers. The incident highlights the importance of vigilance in maintaining security within the community and the police are urging those with any concerns to report them.
