Police discovered the body of a man in undergrowth adjacent to the motorway, leading to the closure of the M1 in both directions near Watford between junctions five and six. The closure, which occurred at approximately 3:00 pm GMT on Monday, caused substantial delays during the evening rush hour whilst officers worked to determine the cause of the man’s death. The death is being treated as unexplained.
The southbound part of the motorway reopened at 6:30 pm, with the northbound stretch reopening just after 10:00 pm. One of three lanes northbound, however, remained closed on Tuesday. A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Police commented on the discovery and said: “We were contacted earlier this afternoon after the body of a man was found in undergrowth at the side of the motorway between junctions five and six. Officers are currently working to establish the circumstances of the man’s death, which are currently unexplained, and will remain in the area this evening and tomorrow.”
The police have yet to identify the man whose body was found in the undergrowth and have not provided any other details regarding the discovery. Those who were caught up in the delays caused by the closure of the motorway expressed their frustration on social media, with some reporting that they were stuck in their cars for more than an hour without moving. The police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward to aid in their investigation.
The unexpected closure of the M1 caused significant disruption across Watford, with many drivers experiencing significant delays as they attempted to navigate the area. Authorities worked to reopen the motorway as quickly as possible, but it’s unclear when the investigation into the man’s death will conclude. Authorities have instructed drivers to continue to avoid the area if possible to minimise the disruption caused by the police investigation
