The chief inspector of prisons, Charlie Taylor, has warned that drones delivering contraband to inmates in two of England’s highest security prisons have become a national security threat. Mr. Taylor stated that at both HMP Manchester and HMP Long Lartin, in Worcestershire, contraband drops were so frequent that guns could be smuggled in. The two prisons hold some of the country’s most dangerous men, including terrorists, murderers, and organised crime group leaders. According to BBC News, inspectors discovered that there were serious and repeating security failings at both costly and dangerous facilities.
Mr. Taylor said gangs have been using drones to deliver 3lb (1.3kg) of contraband payloads into prison, with inmates arranging the delivery of zombie knives and potentially firearms. In addition, data obtained from Long Lartin, the prison that holds terrorism offenders, revealed that gangs drop black plastic bags from drones. Those bags are indistinguishable from bags of human waste thrown out of cell windows, meaning inmates could quickly collect them by joining litter patrols. Some parties were camouflaging contraband in balls of grass.
The UK’s prison watchdog issued an urgent alert about conditions at Manchester in October, claiming it was one of the country’s most violent jails. It marked the fifth prison in a year that required an emergency response from ministers. The Ministry of Justice, on the other hand, claims it has already taken action by introducing additional security measures, such as a new CCTV system and anti-drone netting.
Mr. Taylor’s warnings come amid damning reports into the respective conditions at maximum security prisons, with prison authorities giving up airspace over jails. With drones regularly circling prison walls at night, prisoners are getting weapons, drugs, and mobile phones. Concerns about armed violence, escapes, and hostage situations have increased, adding to the risk posed by the precarious situation
