Australian Open 2025 results: Emma Raducanu begins her season with scrappy first-round win over Ekaterina Alexandrova

Emma Raducanu kicked off her season with a hard-fought win over Russian 26th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Australian Open 2025. Despite facing disruptions due to a back injury, the British number two won the match 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-2). The game proved to be a challenging one for Raducanu as she lost serve six times due to double faults, hitting 15 double faults in the match.

Despite the strong baseline hits and second serve wobbles, Raducanu regrouped and dominated another tie-break to clinch the win. Next, she will face American Amanda Anisimova in Thursday’s match. Anisimova, ranked 35th, defeated Argentina’s Maria Lourdes Carle 6-2 6-3 to make it through to the next round.

Raducanu confirmed that she was “ready to go” in Melbourne following her recovery from the back spasm that forced her to withdraw from the season-opening tournament in Auckland. However, it was never going to be an easy match for Raducanu on her Grand Slam return against a seeded player.

Raducanu has been working on tweaking her service motion to obtain extra power, but it produced several double faults that resulted in lost points. Nevertheless, she remains confident and optimistic about working on her serve in upcoming matches. In the end, Raducanu dominated the tie-breaks and secured the win, crediting her strength in clutch moments
