Elon Musk has faced backlash after sharing a post on his social media platform X, which suggested that the Welsh Refugee Council (WRC) was using videos of young girls to “entice” migrants to the UK. In response, staff at the WRC reported being harassed online and threatened after the post was shared, which was made worse when the video was viewed more than 5.5 million times. A police investigation is currently underway into the malicious communications.
The video was created as a school project and shows a group of girls explaining why Wales is a welcoming country for refugees. The charity has said it takes “false and defamatory statements seriously”, while the Welsh government said claims relating to the video were “utterly irresponsible”.
Also posting on X, the former leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, accused Labour Welsh government ministers of using schoolchildren as “propaganda” to promote an “ideologically motivated project”. Mr Davies faced backlash over the criticisms he made on social media in 2024, which resulted in a confidence vote being taken in him that ultimately brought him down.
Andrea Cleaver, the chief executive of the WRC, strongly encouraged social media users to fact-check what they’re sharing and seek the right information. “The Welsh Refugee Council remains unwavering in our mission to support sanctuary seekers and refugees, fostering understanding and promoting inclusion,” she said.
