A man has been accused of attempted murder following a stabbing incident of a woman, a nurse at an acute medical unit in Royal Oldham Hospital on Saturday, resulting in life-changing injuries to the victim. The accused, Rumon Haque, has also been charged with the possession of a blade. The police in Greater Manchester have informed that the nurse, who is in her 50s, is receiving medical assistance and treatment for her injuries. The accused, who is based in Greater Manchester’s Royton town, is scheduled to appear before Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
GMP Det Supt Matt Walker expressed the police’s concern and support for the injured nurse. He said the priority of the force is to assist her, her family, as well as her colleagues during this challenging period. He also acknowledged that the officers were attending to the NHS staff that were affected by the Saturday incident.
The attack occurred as the National Health Service is undergoing significant pressure and fatigue due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to an October survey, 14% of the health workers in England reported that they had undergone physical harm or assault representing a concerning increase of 5%. Additionally, there have also been concerns that hospitals will require greater protection from the rising number of COVID patients. No COVID statement has been made regarding the attack.
According to the British Crime Survey, crimes with violence in the United Kingdom have reduced by 19%. However, the crimes with blades have continued to rise. The Office of National Statistics reported that there was a leap of 3.7% in the bladed offenses carrying a knife/cutter. The key problem areas are among the younger people aged between 16 to 24, according to the Ministry of Justice. There has also been a link found between knife crime and lack of social mobility and poverty.
