Another suspect, Adeel Khan, has been charged with helping former soldier Daniel Khalife evade his prison sentence. Khalife, 23, was convicted for spying for Iran, sentencing him to a term in Wandsworth Prison. After pleading guilty to escaping the London facility, Khalife strapped himself onto a food delivery van and fled. A four-day search successfully tracked him back to London, where he was caught. Khan is being accused of aiding Khalife, as well as possession of a phone while incarcerated. He has been scheduled to attend London’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where his charges will be addressed.
Khan’s charges were delivered to him via postal service by London’s Met Police. He is the second man connected with Khalife’s escape, after Imran Chowdhury, who was charged similarly in the weeks prior. Chowdhury entered a plea of not guilty regarding the allegations and was granted bail until his court appearance scheduled for February 4. Khalife’s trial received a conviction in November of 2022 at Woolwich Crown Court, where he admitted to escaping Wandsworth Prison. He was, however, acquitted of the charge of carrying out a bomb hoax at an army barracks. Sentencing for Khalife will take place on February 3.
Khalife’s conviction has sparked interest in his connections to groups that may have aided in his escape and espionage for Iran. The circumstances surrounding his escape continue to draw question, leading to the arrest of Khan and Chowdhury. With investigations still ongoing, further arrests and charges could be delivered in the coming weeks. The London Met Police remain determined in their pursuit of justice and the capture of further details about the incident
