The family of a six-month-old girl who died in a car accident at a multi-storey car park during their holiday in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, is “devastated” by her death, said her father. Alex Kelemen, 27, his wife Betty, 26, and their daughter Sophia, had packed their bags and were preparing to go home when the accident happened. Sophia was taken to hospital for surgery for her injuries, but she died the next day. Kelemen said Sophia’s death was like “a horror movie.”
Flaviu Naghi, 33, from Wigan, is charged with causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a license or insurance. An inquest into Sophia’s death will open on Tuesday. Kelemen hopes to arrange specialist grief counselling for their five-year-old son, Lucas, who has been asking about his sister every day. “He’s our only son now and he’s the most important for us,” he said.
Originally from Romania, the family hopes to have Sophia’s funeral in their homeland as soon as her body is released. Kelemen said, “She’s always going to live in my heart. I know she’s gonna be watching me every day.” The family had taken some final holiday photographs before returning home. “Just before we got to the car, the horror movie started,” said Kelemen.
Sophia was “loving” and “adorable”, said Kelemen, and everybody loved her. Now, the family is trying to help their son understand that he will never see Sophia again. “The biggest pain I’ve had was explaining to him that God loved his sister more than we did and God gave Sophia a brand new set of wings so that she could fly over him and protect him.
