New figures released by GoSafe show more than 85,000 motorists were caught exceeding the 20mph speed limit in Wales last year. The data, which covers the first full year of enforcement after the law’s introduction and includes figures from both north and south Wales, revealed that 48,337 drivers were caught exceeding the limit in the south, while enforcement began a little later in north Wales, where 36,710 were caught.
According to Adrian Berendt, director of 20’s Plenty for Us, the figures indicate that the effectiveness of the new default speed limits has been demonstrated, as the number of offences is largely the same as before the new limits were introduced.
However, people who live on Gors Avenue in Swansea say they are not surprised about the high number of convictions there. Figures show that over 3,700 offences were recorded on the street between January and October last year.
Although pro-20mph campaigners argue that the law is working, residents of Gors Avenue expressed their disapproval of the 20mph limit, which they find difficult to respect, and consider to be slowing local traffic down and reducing everyone’s profit in the area.
According to road safety expert, Dr Alan Tapp, enforcement in roads like Gors Avenue needs to be addressed by the Welsh government, as drivers find it hard to determine when the speed limit is 20mph and when it is not. The Welsh government measures are also provoking irate drivers and causing some cameras to be vandalised.
The Welsh government is now reviewing some stretches of road and considering returning the speed limit to 30mph in some areas, particularly those away from built-up areas
