North Yorkshire: Police officer dies after collision near Thirsk


On Saturday morning, PC Rosie Prior tragically died after being hit by an oncoming lorry. She was assisting with an earlier road accident that occurred on the A19 at Bagby, located near Thirsk. Two other individuals, including the driver of one of the vehicles, Ryan Welford, were also present when the lorry collided with them at approximately 8:55 am. Welford died at the scene, and the other individual is now in the hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The 65-year-old driver of the lorry, from Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. However, he has been later released under investigation. The death of PC Prior has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community, with North Yorkshire Chief Constable Tim Forber calling it a “deeply traumatic and heart-breaking event for everyone involved.”

As per the North Yorkshire Police report, PC Prior was stationed on the verge of A19, assisting the accident victims when the oncoming lorry struck them. The deceased officer’s family provided a statement where they remembered her as “a loving mom, wife, daughter, sister, auntie and will be deeply missed.” The family of Ryan Welford also mourned his loss, addressing him as a “hard-working and loving father, husband, son, and brother. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.”

The police have appealed to any witnesses or drivers who may have dash-cam footage of the incident to email the major collision investigation team at mcit@northyorkshire.police.uk, citing reference number 12250006038. Investigations are ongoing, and the authorities have yet to release relevant details related to the tragedy’s cause
