Following reports of two illegally released lynx in the Highlands, footage has emerged of experts successfully capturing the cats. The animals were first spotted in the Drumguish area near Kingussie on Wednesday at around 4:20 pm.
Working with the police, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) acted to trap the animals humanely overnight. They were subsequently moved to quarantine facilities at the Highland Wildlife Park before being transferred to Edinburgh Zoo. The RZSS condemned the illegal release, labelling it as “highly irresponsible”.
Despite the reckless behaviour of the individuals responsible for the release, the lynx appear to be in good health. They have even been given names: ‘The Killiehuntly Two’. Nevertheless, the charity warns that the animals would likely not survive in the wild, further emphasizing the severity of the situation.
The successful apprehension of the lynx relays the efforts of the RZSS and the police to protect Scotland’s wildlife. By efficiently and ethically restoring the animals, their care is now in the hands of experts and measures can be taken to ensure the safety of the lynx moving forward
